The “family business” is an interesting concept to me. When people think of nepotism, it immediately brings up feelings that someone did not work to reach their accomplishments and we think of that as negative. However, in almost all forms of entertainment, we seem to be obsessed with it. I have been transfixed on the 2019 Toronto Blue Jays, which feature Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Cavan Biggio, and Bo Bichette, sons of Vladimir Guerrero, Craig Biggio, and Dante Bichette, all former Major League stars. I am also interested in Sierra Canyon High School basketball, which featured Kenyon Martin Jr. and Scottie Pippin Jr. last year and will have LeBron James Jr. and Dwayne Wade’s son Zaire Wade next year. We can see the skill on the court, so we understand it is not nepotism, but that does not exist in other professions. For me, my parents are doctors, so I was expected to follow the “family business” and become a doctor too. But I hate blood. The inside of the body is gross. I hate it. When my mom talks to me about spleens, she lights up. In her case, this was her dream.
My parents were both biology nerds because they were and still are fascinated by the human body. It is to the point where it sometimes feels like my little sister and I are just lab rats for them to practice on, but I have come to be really proud of my parents. They found a way to apply their passion to the world and that is something that is special. When you are someone that is fascinated by any of the functions of the human body or even the lives of any other living thing, biology is the subject for you.
Although my parents chose the medical field, there are plenty of subcategories of biology that involve other species too. Zoology is something that is under the umbrella, so you can learn about the functions of animals too. If you learn enough about them and about humans, maybe you can find a way to give people animal characteristics, like the ability to regenerate limbs or Spider-man powers. In addition to zoology, you might get into botany, which involves studying plants. Just because they are not always as cute or lively as other species, it does not mean they are not alive. In microbiology, you can study bacteria and other things that have the potential to hurt us. In that way, biologists can be the first to fight diseases, even if you think the inside of the body is yucky like me.
I know that this is not for me, but there are so many people that look at these things with interest. We need more people like that and the people like me can focus on what our real purposes are. Admittedly, I am still trying to find that, but I know for sure that it is not in the human or any other body. But that is me. We are here for you. And you should think more about biology.
